Bee's Drop Opening Day Game to Sea Unicorns 11-5
(NEW BRITAIN, CT) — It was a joyous day at New Britain Stadium as the New Britain Bees 2022 campaign got underway. In-state rival, Norwich Sea Unicorns defeated the Bees 11-5 in the first of thirteen matchups between the two teams this season.
Matt Goehrig (Post University/Clifton, NJ) got the start on the mound today, pitching three solid innings, striking out four and allowing only one hit. Goehrig’s only blemish came on a two-out single from Jackson Ferrigno in the top of the third that gave the Sea Unicorn’s a 1-0 lead.
Another run, surrendered by Stony Brook University Sophomore John Kiss (Stony Brook/Hicksville, NY) gave the Sea Unicorns a two-run lead, 2-0.
Finally, after a pair of walks to start the bottom of the fifth, a well-placed single up the middle of the field by Jacksen Petersen (UConn/Sandy Hook, CT) drove in the Bees first run of the season making it 2-1.
The Sea Unicorns hung two more runs in the top of the sixth and the Bees would answer in explosive fashion. Craig Corliss (UMass/Hopkinton, MA) drove one into the outfield scoring Joel Lara (Franklin Pierce University/South Boston, MA) cutting the Norwich lead to 4-2.
Later that same inning, a shallow two-out single from CJ Brito-Trinidad (Bowdoin College/South Kent, CT) scored Corliss and Keegan O’Connor (Quinnipiac/Andover, MA) to tie up the game 4-4 heading into the seventh.
Brian Hart (Stony Brook/Rosedale, NY) relieved Kiss in the top of the seventh, and was able to send the game to the bottom of the inning still tied, 4-4.
Corliss once again came up big driving in Matthew DeRosa (Quinnipiac/North Haven, CT) and giving the Bees their first lead of the day, 5-4.
The action continued in the eighth when the Sea Unicorn’s were able to put up four more runs on the Bees making it 8-5.
Elijah Cohen (Colby College/Marblehead, MA) threw one and a third innings, allowing three unearned runs and one strikeout.
The Sea Unicorn’s held the Bees to six hits while tallying thirteen of their own.
The Bees bats were lively in the inaugural game of the season. Corliss accounted for three of the Bees five runs. Lara stole the show tallying four stolen bases this during the contest.
The Bees are back in action tomorrow night at 6:35 P.M. against the Brockton Rox as New Britain, CT Native Chris Gibbs (Mitchell College) makes his Bee’s debut. The first three hundred fans at tomorrow’s game will receive an Alvarium Beer Company tote bag.
