Eighth Inning Rally Propels Bees To 7-6 Win Over Lake Monsters

By Connor Wilson

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Playing against the Vermont Lake Monsters for the second straight day, the New Britain Bees pulled off a 7-6 come from behind victory on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

New Britain starter Peter Dubie (Brown/Indianapolis, IN) had a very efficient outing, tossing three hitless innings with six strikeouts and just two walks.

The game started as a pitchers duel early on with each side trading scoreless innings, but the Lake Monsters broke it open against the Bees bullpen for four runs in the top of the fourth to go up 4-0.

The Bees also got on the board in the fourth as Tyler Pettorini (Ohio State/Wooster, OH) led off the inning with a double and Aidan Cohall (St. John’s/Bronx, NY) drove him home with an RBI single to make it 4-1.

Vermont would tack on two more runs in the sixth to go up 6-1.

After going quiet, the bats started buzzing for the Bees in the eighth when Garrett Scavelli (St. John’s/Franklin Square, NY) drew a leadoff walk. Pettorini followed with a no-doubt home run over the wall in right to make it 6-3.

Bryce Molinaro (Penn State/Drums, PA) followed the Pettorini blast with a double off the wall and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Brady Short (CCSU/Hurley, NY), who drove in a run with a fielder's choice to make it 6-4.

Two batters later, Billy Minett (St. Thomas Aquinas/Staten Island, NY) demolished a long three run shot over the left field wall to give the Bees a 7-6 lead to complete the comeback.

Christian Pedro (Amherst College/West Hartford, CT) tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the save and secure a much needed win for New Britain, who had dropped seven of nine before Sunday.

Pettorini’s home run was his fourth of the season and Minett’s was his third.

Three Bees had multi-hit efforts in the win, as Pettorini had three knocks and Molinaro and Christian Scanlon (Merrimack/West Haven, CT) had two each.

Up next in the schedule is the 2023 FCBL All Star Week festivities. Pettorini will be participating in the Home Run Derby tomorrow night and nine Bees will be playing in the All Star Game on Tuesday up in Vermont.

The next game for the Bees is on Thursday when New Britain travels to Pittsfield to take on the Suns in a doubleheader. The next home game at New Britain Stadium is Friday night when the Norwich Sea Unicorns come to town for a 6:35 p.m. start.
