Bees Take Series From Blue Crabs With One-Run Victory

Stewart Tallies His First Win In A New Britain Uniform

(Waldorf, MD– May 24, 2018) – The New Britain Bees (9-16) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (8-17) 3-2 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Thursday night in the finale of a four-game series in the Chesapeake State.

New Britain starting pitcher Zach Stewart (1-3) won for the first time in a Bees uniform after allowing just one run on five hits in five and one-third innings on the mound, walking one and striking out seven. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Paul Clemens (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs on two hits (one home run) across four and two-thirds innings pitched, walking three while striking out seven while tossing a wild pitch. Tyler Higgins shut the door in the bottom half of the ninth inning for his second save of the series and season.

Southern Maryland took a 1-0 lead versus Stewart in the home half of the fourth inning on a two-out run-scoring single by Cory Vaughn that plated Angelo Songco. New Britain scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning with a rally of their own that stated with the bases empty and two away when Ozney Guillen belted an opposite-field solo home run over the short porch in left off Clemens to get the visitors even. The Bees would take a 2-1 lead later in the frame when Deibinson Romero allowed James Skelton to cross the plate by way of an RBI base knock after Skelton followed Guillen’s roundtripper with a walk and a stolen base. New Britain tacked on what turned out to be a king-sized insurance run in the top of the seventh for a 3-1 advantage on Romero’s second RBI single of the contest that enabled Darren Ford to cross the plate after he singled and stole his team-leading seventh base preceding the Romero base hit. Guillen showed off his defensive skills in this ballgame as well in the bottom of the eighth inning to preserve the lead, as he was able to keep the Bees ahead 3-2 after the Blue Crabs cut the two-run deficit in half and were looking for more when he threw out the potential tying-run at home plate in Edwin Garcia by way of a one-hop strike to Skelton from left field on a base hit off the bat of Songco. Southern Maryland would not get any closer as New Britain was able to hang on for the one-run victory, taking three of four games in the series. The Bees have now won five of their last six games on the road and six of the last seven contests they have played at Regency Furniture Stadium dating back to the 2017 season.
