The Bees: New Britain’s 2 runs on Friday came in different innings; one in the 3rd and one in the 5th. The first run came on an RBI single by Michael Baca to bring home Ivan Villaescusa from second base to give the Bees an early 1-0 lead. The second run came from Ivan Villaescusa’s first Atlantic League home run in the top of the 5th inning, which gave New Britain a 2-1 lead at the time. Mike Hepple, Nate Roe, and Brandon League combined to pitch 3 1/3 innings of relief without allowing an earned run.

The Opposition: Somerset starter Connor Root has made 2 relief appearances against New Britain, allowing 5 hits and 3 earned runs through 4 1/3 innings pitched. Of Somerset’s 5 total runs on Friday, only 1 of them was scored off of a base hit. 3 of them were scored with bases loaded walks, and another on a wild pitch. Yovan Gonzalez had 3 hits in the game, including an RBI single to score the other Somerset run. 8 total Patriots batters drew a walk in the contest on Friday, which ties the season high for most walks drawn in a single game by a Bees opponent.

Starting Pitchers – New Britain: LHP Nick Greenwood (0-2, 6.27) | Somerset: RHP Connor Root (0-0, 4.15)

Key to the Game – Small ball tactics:  Connor Root has only made 1 start this season of his 6 total games pitched. In those 6 games, he has allowed 19 total hits through 17 1/3 innings, however only 4 of the hits were for extra bases: 2 home runs, 1 double and 1 triple. His one and only start came on July 18th against Bridgeport. In that game he gave up 4 runs through 4 innings off of 7 hits, and only 1 of those hits were for extra bases. Look for the Bees to create small ball tactics against Root, from drawing walks with extra plate discipline to sacrificing outs to generate more offensive opportunities.
